Everything You Need To Know About Pre-Workout

What is a Pre-Workout?

No one shows up at the gym feeling 100% charged and ready to go every time.

Sometimes, you’ll be tired, not feeling great or you’d just rather go home and put your feet up. if that sounds familiar, a pre-workout may be the nudge you need to get you racing back to the gym.

Pre-workout products have become increasingly popular among gym-goers in recent years. With claims they help you train harder and for longer, pre-workouts say they’ll boost energy levels and increase focus. Available in a variety of formats, from shakes, gels, pills, and functional energy drinks combined with a huge variety of flavours, it's obvious why so many people are using a pre-workout as a routine part of their training.

Do pre-workouts work?

Sound too good to be true? Well, it's not just manufacturer’s claims that consumers need to believe, a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition reported that people using pre-workout powder with HIIT workouts resulted in significant increases in VO2 max, training volume and lean body mass while also speeding up the rate at which moderately trained recreational athletes lost body fat.

So we know they can work, with so many options on the market, how can you decide which pre-workout supplement is right for you? In this article, we'll look at the two most popular formats, powdered pre-workout and pre-workout-focused functional energy drinks.

Pre-workout powders

These are mixed with water or juice before your workout. Applied Nutrition’s ABE pre-workout launched in 2016 and is Europe’s best-selling pre-workout powder and contains a variety of ingredients designed to increase energy and focus. These are all designed to aid performance and include caffeine for energy and focus, citrulline to boost nitric oxide production and beta-alanine aimed at decreasing muscle fatigue. All ingredients are some of the most well-researched and understood in sports nutrition.

ABE also contains creatine that can increase muscle growth, as well as other ingredients like amino acids and B vitamins for stamina and energy. Combined, these ingredients can be a highly effective supplement that can help you improve mental focus, delay fatigue, and allow you to push harder and longer during your workout.

One of the advantages of pre-workout powders is that they are customisable. You can adjust the dosage based on your individual needs and tolerance, starting small and increasing servings to find your sweet spot.

The convenience of pre-workout energy drinks

Pre-workout functional energy drinks are pre-mixed and typically available in cans or bottles. They often contain many of the same ingredients as pre-workout powders, including caffeine, beta-alanine, citrulline, amino acids and B vitamins.

Pre-workout drinks are convenient, easy to use and a popular choice for people short on time because of the ease of just grabbing one and drinking it on the way to the gym, meaning you’re ready to go when you arrive.

We’ve introduced several new flavours of ABE pre-workout as a functional energy drink in the last year and demand has been growing as a result, with hundreds of gyms across the UK now stocking ABE in their vending machines. Make sure to check yours next time you’re at the gym.

Which pre-workout is right for me?

Both pre-workout powders and drinks can be effective tools for improving your workout performance.

Ultimately, the choice between the two will come down to your personal preferences and needs.

If you value customisation, want to experiment with different dosages and are willing to take the time to mix your supplements, a pre-workout powder may be the way to go. If you prefer the convenience and flavours of a functional pre-mixed energy drink, a pre-workout functional energy drink may be the better option.

Whichever you choose, if you're new to pre-workout products, go for half doses to begin with and increase or decrease from there.
